Notes from author
Long ago, during the crisis in New Londo, Artorias, in the midst of battle, received aid from a naive but bold human. Though the city was lost, the human and Artorias both found themselves to have survived the disaster.
Grateful for the help and wondering about this young human, Artorias asked his name. He was Lucius, of clan Castus, and the last member of his family. The Knight of Gwyn took pity on him, and named him his squire, bringing him to Anor Londo and training him in the art of combat and knighthood. He took an interest in each of the Four Knights, admiring them for their best qualities. Artorias's unbending will and skill with a greatsword, Ornstein's quick-thinking and powerful counterattacks, Gough's amazing aim and patience, and Ciaran's speed and dexterity. Through him, their previous absolute distaste of humans grew to a tolerance, and then curiosity. He was ever at odds with Smough, who swore one day to kill him.
However, just after Gwyn had left, as Artorias was about to head to Oolacile to halt the spread of the Abyss, it was found that Lucius bore the Darksign on his body. He was dragged away from his master and his friends, his sword was shattered in front of him, and he was thrown into an Undead Asylum far to the north, and left there for a thousand years as he slowly degraded into a mindless Hollow.
However, just on the cusp of hollowing out completely, someone threw a key into his cell from the ceiling. The roof was open, and a knight of Astora stood there, watching him, before turning to leave. Lucius was brought back from the edge of his despair. Taking the key and his broken sword in hand, he left his cells for the first time in a millennium.
And so begins his tale...
