His goal the same he continues to kindle bonfires but... he gets the required humanity in very unholy ways and after kindling so many bonfires his equipment got corrupted like his soul! His miracles shifted from ones that were for self-defence to ones to take lives.
It is thought that he became this way after kindling the abyss bonfire where he found kaathe.
