Haphephobia is the fear of physical contact, so even when he's forced to do melee he wants to be as far away as possible (hence the scythe).
"Pockets" is due to an unfortunate nickname I received at work, and it seems fitting since avoiding touching people would mean having his hands in his pockets all the time.
