Shields have an interesting property where they block as you attack. The Pierce Shield, which is actually a decent weapon in its own right, deals thrust damage, which means it gets a boost from the Leo ring. Since you block as you attack, you can easily trade hits while simultaneously blocking attacks, without the huge stamina penalty of poking behind a shield. The Dark Silver Tracer is simply there as a critical weapon, since shields cannot perform backstabs or ripostes.
