Before his decent in the Oolacile Abyss, Artorias, feeling the onset of madness, left with Ciaran a decendant, Faolan. And in her grief at Artorias' death by the "Chosen Undead" leaves Faolan in Astora, where he learns the way of the blade from their knights.
During his training, Faolan becomes aflicted with the Darksign and sent away to the Undead Asslyum, where upon he is freed by a fellow Astorian.
Oscar, in the final moments of his life, passes on his Crest shield to Faolan, imbuned with divine magical protection like Artorias' Greatshield, and sends him off, faithful in Faolin's inner strength.
And so with little knowledge of the Lord Blade's skills and only tales of his Father's Sword he leaves Firelink Shrine in search of answers to his parents fate
