If you remove the bow you can use a shield. The free ring slot works well with wolf ring to give 62 poise or the DWGR to get the pro dodges or if you feel particularly critical the hornet ring. I recommend wolf if you want to parry and don't feel confident toggling and want to keep the whip equipped.
