I have done a few (PvE only) playthroughs of DS2 but have never come up with a build anywhere near as OP as this, especially mid-game. Basically make first priority levelling FTH and INT to 20/20, so that you can get the Sunset Staff and Hexer Gear from Felkin The Outcast, also levelling END and VIG as you go enough to not to be able to survive in fast-paced combat. At your leisure, beat The Rotten and then burn a bonfire ascetic from Hidden Chamber bonfire in Black Gulch and then beat him again, obtaining the Old Dead One soul, with this you can make Crypt Blacksword, which can be dark infused to be very powerful (600-700AR in early/mid game). Another alternative early is the Black Knight UGS (possibly fire-infused), which has a brilliant R2. Also dark-infuse Sunset Staff and level it up. You may want to upgrade a mace and/or the Malformed Skull for two excellent strike weapons, fast and slow respectively. Caitha's Chime (probably dark infused), and The Witchtree branch and/or Black Witch Staff are two nice additions to your staff collection too. Finally upgrade the pyromancy glove and you have a mid-game build that has what amounts to medium armor with serious offensive power in every kind of magic (especially dark and fire), access to high poise greatswords and hammers to bully humanoid enemies, and the opportunity to swing faster weapons (e.g. mace or blue flame etc) too, if that takes you fancy
